HELPING HANDS

Social Work

Holding Hands

My earliest memories was watching my mother help those in need. She would diligently and whole- heartedly help people; sometimes, even go out of her way to do so. Curious, I asked her why she would go through all that effort and she explained that it was every human's rights to basic necessities. This stayed with me- ‘help those in need’.

From early on, I volunteered my time to different NGO’s and church groups in Bangalore city. This gave me the opportunity to visit many orphanages, drug and rehabilitation centres and old age homes. Though it felt ‘nice’ to do my bit, it also left me feeling sad that I could not be of much help to them. The fire of frustration remained with every visit. Life happened and it wasn’t until 2017, when this fire was reignited. The feeling of helplessness- unable to ‘do more’ for my counselling clients, encouraged me to enrol for my Masters in Social Work. This course enabled me with the theoretical and practical knowledge on social justice and importance of self- determination.

As a social worker, I operate on a strength- based model; i.e., the client is the expert of their lives. Helping Hand's purpose would be to empower people in order to help bring about a systemic change within the community, hoping to create a positive ripple effect. My aim is to renew a sense of community within our society, without being influenced by caste, colour, race, religion or any other biases. The focus is on enabling humanity and emotional well- being within the masses- starting with one person at- a- time.
